Businesses with years of customer chats

Sell chat transcripts to AI, after reading what your chat tool kept

A transcript is written once in the chat window and then lives in the vendor's system under the vendor's terms. We read 19 documents from 16 chat, messaging and chatbot tools up to 2026-10-28; 7 of 16 keep a right to the conversations once they are aggregated or anonymised.

What live chat, messaging and chatbot tools say about your transcripts

Last updated

Each row is one chat tool, linked to the document we read. A stated answer stands on a sentence in that document; where none of the tool's documents we read answers a question, the row reads not stated.

Each vendor's own published terms were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every document, four questions were answered from the vendor's own words: who owns the business's data, vendor keeps aggregated or anonymised use, training AI on the business's data, export at exit. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the document read does not address the question. A vendor with several documents reads 'varies' where they disagree. 16 vendors, 19 documents.

The process

01 Tell us which chat tool the conversations sit in and roughly how many years they cover.
02 We read that tool's row on our board and the US rules a chat transcript carries.
03 You get a written reply on whether the archive can be licensed, sold with a closing business, or brought to us by your adviser.

Chat tools and data buyers named here did not pay to appear and were not told we read their pages; the site has no affiliate links. Rows are our reading of published documents, not legal advice on your own agreement. Our fee: if a business licenses its transcripts to a buyer we introduced, it pays us 12.5% of the deal with a minimum while we act as its sole agent, or 10% with a minimum where its chats are sold in a pool with others; we agree this in writing first, and anything a buyer pays us is credited to the business.

Questions, answered directly

Can a business sell its customer chat transcripts to AI companies?
It can license what it holds the rights to, once names and contact details are stripped. Several organisations on our buyers board say they take conversation threads from the companies that hold them: Troveo asks for complete chat threads with replies intact, and Nyne for full conversation histories with their reply structure.(Live chat software data terms: every row, with its source)
Does my live chat tool already use my transcripts to train AI?
Some do. Intercom's terms let it use customer data to improve its services including Intercom AI model training, and Gorgias reserves use of customer data for its internal machine learning models. Tidio and Help Scout let customers opt out, and Crisp says it does not train its models on customer data.(Live chat software data terms: every row, with its source)
Who owns the chat transcripts, me or the chat vendor?
On our board 7 of the 16 chat tools write that the customer owns them; the rest of the documents we read are silent. Silence is a gap in the terms, not a grant to you.(Live chat software data terms: every row, with its source)
How do I get my chat history out before I cancel?
Do it before notice. Freshworks keeps data available for export for 14 days after an account closes, Front for 30 days and Gorgias for 45 days on request, while Trengo deletes all data once the agreement ends and Manychat may delete it on cancellation.(Live chat software data terms: every row, with its source)
Is reading a website chat a wiretap in California?
California Penal Code 631 punishes anyone who, without the consent of all parties, reads or tries to learn the contents of a communication while it is in transit. Whether a chat counts depends on how it was captured, so the consent your site collected is the first thing a buyer will ask about.(Live chat software data terms: every row, with its source)
What about chats handled by a bot?
California's Business and Professions Code 17941 makes it unlawful to use a bot to mislead someone about its artificial identity to drive a sale, unless the bot is disclosed clearly. A buyer reading bot transcripts will want to see that disclosure in the logs.(Live chat software data terms: every row, with its source)
